Minecraft is a first person 3D multi-platform sandbox MMO, which allows players to traverse, build and interact with other players online as well as combat against various enemies. Since its release in 2010 it has sold well
over 121 million copies have been sold across all platforms, including over 27
million PC copies, making it the biggest selling PC game of all time making it the second most successful video game on the planet just behind Tetris
Minecraft was originally created by a swedish game developer called notch in 2009 using JAVA code. The developers original intention was to create a multiplayer game that would implement various mechanics such as crafting which is a big feature of the game, hence the name, which is it's main selling point. Minecraft’s initial reception, when it became playable in 2010, wasn’t commercially viable as it was seen more as a niche product for players with expert knowledge of computers and programming. Gamers were able to contribute to the development of the program eliminating bugs and facilitating multiplayer capability. But over time amongst the official release of the game in 2011, popularity of the game began picking up with a select few Youtubers playing it on there channels giving the game further recognition until the biggest Youtuber of all time, Pewdiepie, began playing the game regularly on his channel. This lead to the popularity of the game sky rocketing. This resulted in the game catching the attention of Microsoft. A deal of $2.5 billion was placed for all rights of Minecraft from Mojang (the developers of the now completed Minecraft). With Microsoft now owning the game, the game became more developed year by year as new and more advanced coding (C++) was integrated into the software constantly allowing the game to branch out and be released on various other consoles besides other than PC, such as Playstation, Xbox one, Nintendo and even mobile devices.
The more the game progressed commercially the more money that was pumped into improving the game resulting in various versions of Minecraft being created such as, 'Minecraft story mode', 'Minecraft VR', 'Minecraft education'.
In conclusion, i believe the evolution of Minecraft was perfect for the design and gameplay that has been created for the players, that is why it is justified for grossing over $100 billion US dollars globally, however recently, despite Minecraft still being relevant online, a new game has gained popularity called 'Fortnite'.

Minecraft
has
universal appeal. It is useful to explore how such a game can appeal to
different ages, genders and audiences from different social and cultural
backgrounds. The variety
of different modes is certainly a contributing factor to the game’s success,
but also the way in which audiences can control and shape their own worlds and
create new identities through mods and altering textures, maps and craft kits. Furthermore, the introduction of 'story mode' also appeals to a wider audience as it is a 'point and clique' made by the telltale series which are known for taking various IP's and creating a narrative focused point and click game. The creation
of Minecraft Realms was a well-considered way to attract and encourage
audiences to use the game on dedicated servers. In the early days of Minecrafts production advertising the game relied on word of mouth between
gamers and featured on sites such as the Penny Arcade web comic to
generate interest amongst gamers. As the game began to become more popular the more focus was put on advertisement and marketing. A partnership with Lego to create play set with a Minecraft theme was released in toy stores globally. A limited edition, custom made, Minecraft theme xbox was released.
Also, Youtube became a massive platform for the game, channels would be getting millions of subscribers and tens of millions of views on funny Minecraft videos with even the biggest Youtuber on the planet playing it regularly on the site. some channels where even created purely from the game as evident of a Youtuber called 'Sky does Minecraft', since then his channel has accumulated a whopping 11.6 million subscriber from regularly releasing Minecraft content such as gameplay videos.
The establishment of Minecraft Marketplace is
a great example of the industry listening to their audiences and fans allowing the
trade of different maps, textures, updates, patches, DLC and ‘add ons’ in a legitimate secure setting. Forums also exist on Reddit for tutorials tips and tricks for fellow players, this is because the nature
of the game has also allowed players to interact with one another as well as learn new skills such as, programming in the process.
